Smart Bot Reads Your Facebook, Mimics You in Spear Phishing Messages

Spear phishing is increasingly getting easier for criminals trying to put together social engineering attacks, and it's all thanks to to the data you yourself post online, researchers said at a session at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

Attackers mine the posts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare, and other online properties to find information that people provide about themselves, but also to mimic people's writing style, such as frequently used words, said Trustwave researchers Joaquim Espinhara and Ulisses Albuquerque during their presentation on Thursday. All this information is used to craft a message that actually sounds like someone the victim would know.

Many attack emails are actually recognizable as malicious precisely because they don't sound like something a real person the victim knows would say. But if attackers can refine the tone of the message, then they are likely to trap that victim, Espinhara and Alburquerque said.

Black Hat 2013 Bug

Microphisher
To prove their point, Trustwave researchers released a new tool at the conference which analyzes public posts and creates a "fingerprint" for each person's communication style. Microphisher uses natural language processing to analyze public posts on social networks and other online sites. Even how you use hashtags on Twitter, how long your typical sentence is, and topics you generally write about, can all be used towards determining your fingerprint, Alburquerque said.

Microphisher is intended to help organizations improve their IT security, Alburquerque said. Trustwave SpiderLabs frequently put together penetration tests and other social engieering tests to determine how effective an organization is in thwarting spear phishing. Microphisher can be used to craft messages that are similar in style and content to what a specific individual would write. With a more natural sounding and topical message, Trustwave could test the organization's security readiness much more effectively, Alburquerque said.

Imagine if attackers analyze the contents of a CEO's Twitter feed with Microphisher. They can then craft a message that mimics his or her style and send it to other employees, who would likely click on a link in the email or open the attachment because it would sound like something the CEO would normally write, they said.

The reverse is also possible, where the tool can be used to figure out which posts were legitimately written by someone and which one was faked. "The same tricks can be used to evaluate whether emails are realistic, if you know the sender's Twitter account," Alburquerque said.

Microphisher relies on statistical analysis to determine how close a message being written is to an email profile, so cannot be used to automatically generate believable phishing messages.

Stay Safe
As always, people should not click on random, unknown links or open attachments, regardless of the source. It doesn't matter if you know who the person sending the information is?since it is increasingly clear that there is plenty of information available online to create convincing fakes.

U.S. accuses JPMorgan of manipulating California energy market

Electricity traders at a JPMorgan Chase & Co. subsidiary manipulated the California energy market for 10 months in 2010 and 2011, costing ratepayers tens of millions of dollars, government regulators charged.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission late Monday issued a formal "notice of alleged violations" against the Wall Street investment bank.

The notice set the stage for an announcement of an expected settlement between the financial giant and the agency. Such an agreement could come as early as Tuesday, according to people familiar with the federal investigation, who were not authorized to speak on the record.

The settlement could be close to $500 million, including civil penalties to be paid to the U.S. Treasury and disgorged profits that eventually would be credited back to California electric consumers, they said.

FERC spokeswoman Mary O'Driscoll declined to comment on the document or on possible penalties, as did JPMorgan representative Brian Marchiony.

The likely announcement of a settlement would be in line with a recent FERC enforcement action against British bank Barclays and four of its traders to pay $453 million in civil penalties in a separate case of alleged market manipulation in California and other states from 2006 to 2008.

In the JPMorgan case, FERC staff found that the bank "engaged in five manipulative bidding strategies designed to improperly obtain payments at above-market rates from the California Independent System Operator." The quasi-governmental company, based in Folsom near Sacramento, runs most of the state's electricity transmission grid.

The grid operator has estimated that California industrial, commercial and residential consumers overpaid their electric bills by $63 million.

In one of the alleged schemes, traders submitted day-ahead bids with attractively low prices to supply power. The grid operator, however, wound up being forced to make payments of tens of millions of dollars at rates far above market prices when the JPMorgan strategy was fully in place, FERC said.

The commission also alleged that JPMorgan billed the California Independent System Operator $999 per megawatt hour to ramp up power plants in the middle of the night. But then the grid operator had to pay JPMorgan $999 per megawatt hour to turn the power plants down again the next day because JPMorgan's bid turned out to be uneconomical.

The prospect of a multimillion-dollar settlement with no admission of wrongdoing would be a "laughable" civil punishment, said Tyson Slocum, director of the energy program for Public Citizen, a Washington consumer advocacy group.

"Civil fines don't go to California. They don't go to working families. They go to the Treasury," Slocum said. "Who is making California ratepayers whole?"

The charges against JPMorgan "are very similar to the kinds of shenanigans that Enron pulled," he said, referring to the now defunct Texas energy trading company, whose manipulations contributed to the California energy crisis of 2000 and 2001.

College elusive for some immigrants under new law

Many students whose parents entered the United States illegally are finding higher education harder to afford under an Indiana law that requires those without proof of citizenship to pay out-of-state tuition rates.

A law that took effect July 1, 2011, left non-citizens enrolled in college with few options. They could either pay out-of state tuition or drop out and wait for immigration reform to pass or apply for a work permit under a federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

The Kokomo Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1419UH9 ) a bill passed this year will help about 300 students who were enrolled on or before July 1, 2011, pay in-state tuition rates.

Sen. Jean Leising sponsored the bill and says she thought it was fair to grandfather in those students already enrolled.

Ouya Game Console Owners Not Playing Games - internet TV

The Ouya Kickstarter-funded android based game console has been eagerly awaited by gamers. And since the launch it seems the eagerness has evaporated, as a mere 27% (or less than a third) have paid for a single game.

ouya-games-consoleThe $99 console launched last month is by definition a cheap entry into the console market, and will appeal to those that are fed up with paying $40-60 for a game,? but it would be like buying a new Xbox one and not bothering to buy a game!

Many android games are of the ?freemium? variety, that is you can download a free version and pay if you want extra level or the full version. And of course, the android system makes for a great streaming device and XBMC media platform.

Most early buyers of the fledgling game console have been crowdsource investors, so possible the console is more of a trophy than a working product, and it could be that the second wave of public Ouya buyers may be a little less ?tight?.

Speaking to The Verge CEO of Ouya, Julie Uhrman put on a brave face saying that sales have been, ?better than expected,? and that, ? For 13 of the top 20 games on the system, at least eight percent of free downloads are converted into a paid purchase.?

And pointing to the fact is has literally just been released she said, ?I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 percent attach rate on a platform that?s 30 days old. These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year we?ll see a few developers telling us they?ve made more than a million dollars on Ouya.?

As if the low sales are not bad enough, soon Ouya will have to contend with a rival android console from Google according to the WSJ. They report that the search engine giant are designing and marketing the device themselves following the success of Android which powers over 75% of all smartphones.

Crackdown In Egypt Shows Shift In Military's Approach

In Egypt, protests against the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi turned deadly Saturday, after Egyptian security forces launched the most violent crackdown yet on those demonstrators.

The Egyptian Health Ministry says around 80 people were killed ? most of them in Cairo. The Muslim Brotherhood, from which the deposed president hails, put the death toll at nearly twice that number. Hundreds more were injured.

The crackdown may be part of a plan to seriously weaken ? if not dismantle ? the Brotherhood.

The scene was chaotic at the main morgue in Cairo, where ambulance workers and emotional relatives of those killed tried to carry their bodies inside. But the morgue was full, and many of the dead remained outside in the sweltering heat. A father whose son had been killed tearfully prayed for help.

Basma Zahran, a lawyer the Nadim Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence, says it's the first time she's she seen the morgue in this state. She adds many of those killed appear to have died from gunfire.

That's something the Egyptian government denies. But as is often the case these days, each side tells a very different story of what happened.

The Interior Minister says police used tear gas to try and disperse pro-Morsi protesters who wanted to attack their opponents at a military-sponsored rally Friday night. The Muslim Brotherhood says what happened was an unprovoked massacre of Morsi supporters, approved by the military.

Some analysts say, unprovoked or not, the crackdown signals a disturbing shift in the military's approach to the Brotherhood, which has a large political base in Egypt.

"This is a new and very troubling escalation, because even under the Mubarak regime, there was never a decision to destroy the Brotherhood," says Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Center.

He adds that the generals appear to want to get rid of the group and end the debate over the forcible removal of Egypt's first democratically elected president.

"The military has decided that it can't afford to have hundreds of thousands of people camped out in different parts of Egypt for the foreseeable future ? that's no way to run a country, in their view," Hamid says.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim reinforced that notion at a news conference. He said police will come up with a plan to clear the streets after prosecutors complete an investigation into the pro-Morsi protests.

Ibrahim said he also reactivated much-hated security agencies that spy on Egyptians and were mothballed after Hosni Mubarak's ouster. He claimed the absence of these agencies is why Egypt is in turmoil now.

But with the prospect of further crackdowns, the Brotherhood made it clear that it won't go quietly. The group's spokesman, Ahmed Aref, vowed that Morsi supporters will continue their protests and seek justice for their dead comrades.

(AP) ? Egypt's criminal investigation against the ousted president, announced Friday, is likely just the start of wider legal moves against Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood ? ominous prospects for a country seething with violent divisions.

During Morsi's three weeks in secret detention, military intelligence agents have extensively questioned him on the inner workings of his presidency and of the Brotherhood, seeking to prove he committed crimes including handing state secrets to the Islamist group, military officials told The Associated Press.

Military intelligence has had sole access to him and has questioned him at least once a day, sometimes for up to five hours, the officials said. At times they have presented him voice recordings of his conversations to question him on them, they said.

Throughout, Morsi has been denied access to television and newspapers, they said. He has been moved at least three times between Defense Ministry facilities in armored vehicles under heavy guard. He is currently in a facility outside Cairo, they said, without elaborating.

The military appears not to have decided yet what to do with the information it is gathering. But the officials said it could be used to fuel the civilian prosecution already underway, indict other Brotherhood figures or to justify a more dramatic move: renewing the ban on the Muslim Brotherhood itself.

The group was banned for decades, but became legal after Mubarak's fall and was widely seen as the real power and decision-maker behind Morsi during his year in office. Morsi and the group denied it played any role.

"We allowed Hosni Mubarak to be put on trial and he is one of our own, so there is nothing to stop us from doing this," said one military official familiar with the thinking of the military leadership. Mubarak was a career air force officer touted as a war hero before he became president in 1981. After his 2011 ouster, he was put on trial for complicity in killing protesters.

Since army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi removed Morsi on July 3, Egypt's first freely elected president has been held incommunicado by the military. Six well placed military and security officials, including two in military intelligence, spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the closed-door questioning.

On Friday, civilian prosecutors announced they had launched an investigation into Morsi on charges of murder and conspiring with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. At the heart of the case are allegations that Morsi and the Brotherhood worked with Hamas to carry out an attack on a prison that broke Morsi and around 30 other members of the group out of detention during the 2011 uprising against Mubarak. The attack killed 14 inmates.

The investigation is the first step toward an indictment and possible trial on the charges, which are punishable by death. Prosecutors ordered Morsi detained for 15 days pending the completion of the investigation and security officials late Friday said he was likely to be moved shortly to a civilian, high-security prison south of Cairo.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Brotherhood and Hamas deny the charges, calling them politically motivated. Morsi and the Brotherhood figures freed with him have said local residents attacked the Wadi el-Natroun prison to free their own relatives and that they escaped amid the chaos.

The move to prosecute Morsi shows the "bankruptcy of the leaders of the bloody coup," Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref said in a statement. Egyptians, he added, will reject "the return of the dictatorial police state and all the repression, tyranny and theft it entails."

But the accounts of Morsi's interrogations suggest the military has a more ambitious aim to cripple the 85-year-old Brotherhood.

A move to ban the group again would likely bring a backlash from Islamists.

One senior Brotherhood official, Mohammed el-Beltagy, sought to belittle the significance of such a move.

"They can dissolve it if they want. They are dissolving the whole country now," he told the AP at the site of the group's main protest sit-in at an eastern Cairo district.

Another Brotherhood figure told AP that the group is fully aware that a new ban "cannot be ruled out." But he warned that the result would be "a tragic phase" that would "end with el-Sissi's fall." He spoke on condition of anonymity because the group had not authorized him to discuss the implications of a ban.

The Brotherhood has contended that the military is aiming to crush the Islamist movement after the military coup, which the group and its allies say aims to destroy Egyptian democracy. El-Sissi removed Morsi after four days of massive protests against him by millions of Egyptians.

The military's lines of questioning appear aimed at proving the secretive Brotherhood went far beyond its legal status as a non-government organization involved solely in religious work and put itself above the law.

Military intelligence agents have interrogated Morsi extensively on his actions as president, the officials said. Among the topics are his discussions with foreign leaders during his trips abroad and his ties with Turkey and top Brotherhood ally Qatar, and with Gaza's Hamas rulers, the officials said.

One main avenue is to determine if he gave sensitive state information to Islamist allies abroad or to the Brotherhood, they said.

Another line of questioning focuses on the deeply secretive finances of the Brotherhood and its funding channels abroad, they said.

As a sign of how enmeshed the Brotherhood was with the president, one senior military official noted an incident soon after Morsi took office on June 30, 2012. Morsi brought 19 members of the Brotherhood's top leadership body with him for his first briefing by the then-head of the General Intelligence Agency, Maj. Gen. Murad Muwafi.

When Muwafi objected to their presence because they had no security clearance, Morsi casually told him, "Come on, general, there are no strangers here." Muwafi went on to give the briefing but avoided sharing sensitive material, said the official, who was directly involved in contacts between the Morsi administration and the military and intelligence agencies.

Several weeks later, Morsi fired Muwafi.

The 61-year-old Morsi initially refused to answer investigators' questions but eventually cautiously cooperated, according to a military official with access to records of the questioning.

Throughout, however, he repeatedly declared that he remains Egypt's legitimate president, the official said. He often insisted he tirelessly served Egypt's best interests but was thwarted by the "deep state," the phrase used by Egyptians to refer to Mubarak loyalists and other entrenched powers in the army, security forces and state institutions.

Morsi is observing the dawn-to-sunset fast of the holy month of Ramadan and when not being questioned, he has spent his time praying and reading the Quran, Islam's holy book. He was making a point of praying loudly, seeking God's assistance against his "oppressors," several officials said.

When confronted with audio recordings and documents, Morsi bristled and said his investigators should treat him with the respect a president is entitled to, said the official with access to the questioning records.

At another point, Morsi sarcastically told his interrogators that he did not see the point of them asking him questions since they had video and sound recordings of everything he did while in office, the official said.

Another area that Morsi was being interrogated about is his pardon for dozens of jailed militants who once embraced violence. The officials said the military believes many of them move to Sinai and formed jihadi cells that include foreign extremists.

In the same vein, the military investigators are questioning Morsi on his perceived attempt to stop the military from pursuing militants behind the killing nearly a year ago of 16 army troops at a remote post near the Israel and Gaza borders in Sinai.

During his presidency, Morsi's aides said he was trying to move away from the approach of security crackdowns in Sinai to negotiations to ease discontent among the population there. Opponents accused him of protecting jihadis.

Besides Morsi, five other senior Brotherhood figures have been detained and face investigations by prosecutors on a variety of charges, including inciting violence. More than a dozen others have arrest warrants against them but have not been detained.

Keith Olbermann on his new ESPN show: ?It will be a sports cast with my stamp on it.?

If Keith Olbermann wants to talk about politics on his upcoming nightly talker on ESPN2, he will. But, he says, it has to make sense first. ?I?m not intending to talk about politics, certainly not in the partisan sense and not in the sense I have in the last ten years of work that I?ve done,? he said today during the first day of the Television Critics Association press tour, referring to his time on his MSNBC program Countdown. But, he admitted, ?it?s a sports show and there will be occasions in which?we will have to talk about [it].?

Olberman, who recently settled a legal battle with Al Gore?s Current TV after he was fired from the network, also shot down reports that his contract included any limits on content and confirmed that that there will be no ?pop culture segments.???I?ve done and enjoyed and own the work I did in politics and news, but this is not what this is. I wanted to go back into sports,? he said.

So what can people expect from his program, which marks the host?s return to ESPN almost two decades after he last hosted SportsCenter with Dan Patrick? ?It will be a sports cast with my stamp on it,? he said. Among the segments will be one called ?The Worst Person in the Sports World,? a spin on his Worst Person in the World segments, a staple on?Countdown, which?aired from?2003-11. ?I think people enjoyed my willingness to stick my neck out,? he said.

Olbermann premieres on ESPN2 on Aug. 26.

Motorola Clears The Pipes With New Verizon Droids ? Time For The Google Era To Begin In Earnest

ultra1Motorola released a trio of devices today at a special press event for its line of Verizon phones in New York City. The company showed off phones that in many ways resembled their Droid devices of the past, and these keep the Droid branding, too. They're looking mostly like successors to Razr devices, but with tweaks that could signal what we'll see now that Google is more directly taking the reins at the company.

How to stop Google from spamming your Gmail inbox with ads

Gmail Inbox Ads

Earlier this week,?Google adopted a new strategy and is?now placing targeted advertisements in the inboxes of Gmail users. The company is rolling out a redesign of the Gmail interface that separates mail through different tabs, such as Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums. In what appears to be an effort to increase revenue from its hugely popular service, Google is also placing advertisements disguised as emails under the new Promotions tab. Naturally, users aren?t happy with the company?s new policy ? but luckily, there is a simple way to get rid of the new ads.

[More from BGR: Here?s live streaming video from Google?s Nexus 7 and Android 4.3 unveiling]

Although ads can be temporarily hidden by tapping the X next to them, this won?t stop them for reappearing the next time users log on. According to Business Insider, the only way to permanently prevent ads from showing up in inbox is by deleting the Promotions tab.

[More from BGR: Google unveils its next-gen Nexus 7 tablet]

This can be done from within Gmail?s settings. To begin, tap the gear shaped icon on the top right corner of the inbox to open the settings page. Next, select the ?configure inbox? option and then choose to disable the ?Promotions? tab.

This, for the time being at least, will keep your Gmail inbox ad-free.

In leadership transition, two Fox accounting alumni make ...

One Fox School of Business accounting graduate passed the baton to another this summer in a transition that made EisnerAmper LLP history. For the two alumni, this hand off was a natural one.

In June, Jay Weinstein relocated from EisnerAmper?s Philadelphia-area offices, where he served as partner-in-charge, to the recently combined New Jersey office, where he

Jay Weinstein

Jay Weinstein

now leads 400 professionals. In his place, Lori Reiner stepped up as partner-in-charge of the firm?s Philadelphia practice. Through this transition, Reiner became the first woman to head an office in firm history.

Weinstein, who earned his BS in accounting in 1983 and his MBA in economics in 1990 at Fox, and Reiner, who earned her BBA in accounting in 1986, were admitted to the EisnerAmper partnership on the same day in April 2000. They have worked closely since then and have helped the firm reach 30 percent growth in Philadelphia in the past five years, despite the difficult economic climate.

The duo, who are close and often joke with each other, have collaborated on how to grow the firm and innovate ?only about a thousand times,? Weinstein said. ?I would say no more than a thousand.?

?We?ve grown together over the years,? Reiner added. ?We really bring different things to the table, but we also work really well together.?

Reiner?s accomplishment of becoming the first woman to head an office in is not the only time she has made firm history. When she was admitted to the partnership in 2000, she became legacy firm Goldenberg Rosenthal?s first female partner.

?It?s certainly very exciting, but I know, and what I?ve heard from my colleagues and my peers, is that they felt I was the right person for the job, and it?s just a bonus that I?m a female,? she said. ?I?ve always been about who?s the right person for the job, and if we can also increase our diversity at all levels, it?s a wonderful thing.?

Lori Reiner

Lori Reiner

Reiner was breaking the mold even before she left Temple. At a time when few students took internships, Reiner did just that. During her junior year she interned with Goldenberg Rosenthal, the firm she later joined that eventually merged into EisnerAmper.

Today both Reiner and Weinstein know the value of quality internships, which are important to both EisnerAmper?s busy season workforce and its ability to hire the best and the brightest in its first-year classes. EisnerAmper has a long history as top recruiter of Fox accounting students, and often that recruitment begins at the internship level.

?We?re committed to Temple as a feeder school,? said Weinstein, who serves on the executive committee of the Fox School?s Accounting Circle, which supports the Department of Accounting and gives industry input into the accounting program.

?We?re a people business, and we?re only as good as the people we hire,? he said. ?We hire a significant number of students from Temple each year because they?re of a high quality.?

Google Sending Ads As Email - Business Insider

new gmail

Gmail

?

Google is starting to send advertisements as e-mails, Stephen Shankland of CNET reports.

The messages appear in a section of Gmail's new multi-tab inbox called "Promotions." Just like a regular email, you can forward the ads to friends and family.

When Google first introduced the new layout in May, it seemed as if the Promotions tab would simply filter offers you already receive from services like LivingSocial or Google Offers. But now it appears that any ad has a chance of landing in your inbox.

Google has displayed ads at the top of the inbox for a while now. But these new ads will be more relevant and less intrusive, Google said in a statement to Venture Beat. That means sometimes you may not see any ads at all.

The ads are reportedly part of Gmail's Sponsored Promotions program, which is currently in limited beta.

Here's what they look like:

Study suggests young African American women who binge eat are more likely to report suicide attempts

Is binge eating a tell-tale sign of suicidal thoughts? According to a new study of African American girls, by Dr. Rashelle Musci and colleagues from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University in the US, those who experience depressive and anxious symptoms are often dissatisfied with their bodies and more likely to display binge eating behaviors. These behaviors put them at higher risk for turning their emotions inward, in other words, displaying internalizing symptoms such as suicide. The study is published online in Springer's journal, Prevention Science.

With the focus on appearance in Western culture, it is not uncommon for many girls and women to have eating behavior problems. The most frequently occurring problem eating behaviors are binge eating, or eating large amounts of food in a short period of time and feeling out of control while eating. This behavior leads to shame, embarrassment, distress and an attempt to conceal it.

Musci and team investigated how depressive and anxious symptoms may be precursors to binge eating behaviors and suicidal outcomes in 313 black females followed for 11 years, from the ages of approximately 6-17 years old. Teacher, parent, and child interviews were carried out, examining levels of anxiety, depression, satisfaction with physical appearance, and eating behaviors, particularly binge eating. The researchers also noted who had reported a suicide attempt during the study period.

The African American females demonstrated dissatisfaction with their physical appearance, which predicted the development of depressive and anxious symptoms in adolescence. These, in turn, predicted binge eating behaviors. Adolescent girls with more binge eating behaviors also reported more suicide attempts.

The authors conclude: "The relationships found in this study offer prevention scientists a unique opportunity to target individuals at high risk of psychiatric problems by intervening in the case of binge eating problems. Our results also support the importance of developing prevention programs that are culturally relevant to individuals."

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 22 (UPI) -- Beatriz Recari jumps eight spots in women's world golf and Catriona Matthew reached No. 10 but former No. 1 Yani Tseng drops from the rankings' upper tier.

Recari won the Marathon Classic, the LPGA's stop in Sylvania, Ohio, on Sunday. She edged Paula Creamer by one stroke for her third LPGA title. She also won on the tour in March.

That moves her to 18th in the latest rankings while Creamer goes up three spots to from 14th to 11th.

Matthew is up two places to 10th while Tseng missed the cut for her third consecutive tournament. Tseng had been ranked No. 1 in the world for 109 weeks -- only Lorena Ochoa held the top spot longer -- but this week she falls an additional two places to 12th.

Tseng took over the No. 1 spot in February 2011 and Stacy Lewis passed her for the top position on March 18, 2013. She quickly dropped from there.

The LPGA, off this week, has the Ricoh Women's British Open Aug. 1-4. Current No. 1 Inbee Park will be going for the fourth of five major tournament titles this year. Women's golf recognizes five events -- the Evian Championship in France in September is the fifth -- as major tournaments.

The world women's golf Top 10 with player's name, home country and rankings point average:

1. Inbee Park, South Korea, 12.96

2. Stacy Lewis, United States, 8.07

3. Suzann Pettersen, Norway, 7.90

4. Choi Na-yeon, South Korea, 7.36

5. Ryu So-yeon, South Korea, 7.21

6. Feng Shanshan, China, 6.10

7. Karrie Webb, Australia, 6.10

8. Jiyai Shin. South Korea, 5.69

9. I.K. Kim, South Korea, 5.64

10. Catriona Matthew, Scotland, 5.44

Skipping Breakfast a Recipe for Heart Disease, Study Finds - Health ...

dont-skip-breakfast-400x400

By Dennis Thompson
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, July 22 (HealthDay News) ? Men who skip breakfast have a 27 percent higher risk of suffering a heart attack or developing heart disease than those who start the day with something in their stomach, according to a new study.

The study confirms earlier findings that have linked eating habits to elevated risk factors for heart disease, the Harvard researchers said.

?Men who skip breakfast are more likely to gain weight, to develop diabetes, to have hypertension and to have high cholesterol,? said Eric Rimm, senior author and associate professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health and associate professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School.

For example, breakfast skippers are 15 percent more likely to gain a substantial amount of weight and 21 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, earlier studies have reported.

The new study, published July 22 in the journal Circulation, found that these men also indulged more heavily in other unhealthy lifestyle choices. They were more likely to smoke, engage in less exercise and drink alcohol.

?We?ve focused so much on the quality of food and what kind of diet everyone should be eating, and we don?t talk as often on the manner of eating,? said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. ?This study is not even discussing the type of food. It?s just talking about behavior and lifestyle choice. Part of heart-healthy living is eating breakfast because that prevents you from doing a lot of other unhealthy things.?

For the new report, researchers analyzed data culled from a 16-year study of nearly 27,000 male health professionals that tracked their eating habits and overall health from 1992 to 2008. During the study period, 1,572 of the men developed heart disease.

The study also found a 55 percent increased risk of heart disease in men who regularly indulge in late-night snacking. However, the researchers did not consider this a public health risk because few men reported eating after they?d gone to bed.

Rimm said there are several possible explanations why skipping breakfast can have such a drastic effect on heart health.

The Harvard study found that men who skip breakfast do not pick up another meal later in the day, which Rimm said indicates that they tend to ?feast? on higher-calorie meals when they do eat. Previous studies have found that feasting can result in high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, compared with nibbling smaller meals.

?It?s the extra strain on the body of eating more calories during the few times in a day they do eat,? he said.

The type of food that a person consumes during breakfast also might be a factor. ?Breakfast is typically a time when people tend to eat a healthy meal,? Rimm said. ?By skipping a meal that usually features fiber or fruit or yogurt, you?re missing out on an occasion where people can get healthy nutrients.?

Younger men tend to skip breakfast more frequently than older men, the investigators found, which leads to another possible explanation. ?It may be in line with the fact that these are men who are rushing out to stressful jobs and not eating along the way,? Rimm said, noting that stress is bad for heart health and is associated with negative lifestyle choices such as drinking or smoking.

The study did not include women, but Steinbaum believes the same pattern likely occurs in women who skip breakfast. ?There haven?t been any studies independently on women, but I would suspect we would find the same outcomes,? she said.

Rimm said the study reinforces the age-old emphasis on breakfast as a key to good health.

?There is so much we know about reducing risk of heart disease, and some things like exercise or quitting smoking take quite a bit of effort,? Rimm said. ?But it is easy without a big huge financial or time commitment to have breakfast, even if it is a bowl of oatmeal or a bit of cereal before you start the day.?
