How can I fix my iPhone 3g 4.2.1? Tried to jailbreak with redsn0w and now it's having troubles.
I just got my first smart phone (iPhone 3g 4.2.1) and wanted to use it on StraightTalk.
I read that in order to unlock the phone for carriers besides AT&T, I had to raise the phone's baseband to the iPad baseband. I was following the instructions on this site, and it said installing the iPad baseband was "currently the only way to unlock 05.14 and 05.15 basebands". That may have changed since then.
That didn't work, and I tried (to no avail) to restore it with iTunes. I ended up stuck with the "Connect USB to iTunes" screen. I looked for help on Reddit, and followed this advice:
Either download the 4.2.1 ispw file for iPhone 3G or locate the ispw file inside your iTunes and place it on your desktop.
Got it (iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw). It takes a long time to download, but isn't hard to find.
Now try and get your iPhone into dfu.
I was stuck in the "Connect to iTunes" page, but this guide helped me get into DFU mode (or so I thought)
Once in dfu open the newest version of redsn0w.
Got redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (OSX) from iphone-dev
Once open click extras,then select ispw. Choose the ispw 4.2.1 on your desk top. Now a pop up will state resn0w will use the 4.2.1 for the remainder.
So far so good!
Select back,then jailbreak. Since you are already in dfu it should skip the step where it shows you how to do it. Now this should get you out of recovery.
Since I heard there was no need to upgrade to iPad baseband, I selected "Downgrade from iPad baseband". Apparently I wasn't in DFU mode, since it gave me steps to enter DFU mode... dangit.
Screen flashed white, then said "Downloading Jailbreak Data?", and a lot of terminal readout showed up on the screen. Now a running pineapple showed up with a status bar under it. Now it's stuck on the apple logo screen, and has been for several minutes. After being stuck about 2 hours, I turned it off, tried to turn it on, and got stuck with the apple logo screen.
Also, the person on Reddit said I didn't need to unlock the iPhone to use it with Straight Talk. Is that true? I talked to some Straight Talk people in a store, and they said I couldn't use iPhone with them, and everything I read said I had to unlock it.
So now, I beseech you for your help
The most my phone will do is show an apple logo when it powers on. iTunes doesn't register that it's plugged in. Por favor help; what should I do?

Obama using voter registration to stay close in NC
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Dozens of volunteers armed with clipboards and voter registration forms gather at President Barack Obama's field office here every day. Their mission: Fan out across the city seeking new voters in this rapidly growing state.
"Are you registered to vote at your current address?" asks Douglas Johnston, a volunteer wooing voters outside the county courthouse. "Do you know about early voting?"
The effort, it seems, has borne fruit ? to the tune of more than 250,000 new registered voters in North Carolina since April 2011, according to Obama's team. That's more new voters than the campaign has registered anywhere else in the country.
It's an eye-popping total in a state that Obama won by just 14,000 votes four years ago. And the flood of new voters ? presumably a chunk of them Democrats ? could help keep North Carolina within the president's reach in a year when everything else here seems to be working in Republican Mitt Romney's favor.
North Carolina has voted for a Democratic presidential candidate just twice in 40 years. The state's economy is abysmal; its 9.7 percent unemployment rate is among the nation's highest. And the president's embrace of gay marriage put him at odds with a majority of North Carolina voters, including many blacks, who make up the core of his support here.
But less than six weeks from Election Day, Romney is spending millions of dollars in television advertising in North Carolina, defending territory that remains more conservative than most of the states that will decide the election. That raises questions about his chances in places like Ohio, Florida and Virginia, where polls show him trailing the president.
Compared with Obama, Romney has fewer paths to victory in the state-by-state contest to cobble together enough wins to reach the requisite 270 Electoral College votes. That makes North Carolina's 15 electoral votes more important to him than to Obama, who could still win the White House without a North Carolina victory.
Romney's campaign won't say how many new voters they have registered in the state. But Republicans credit their field work with a party advantage in absentee voting requests in North Carolina, where they say they lead 48 percent to 31 percent for Democrats.
Of course, registration numbers alone don't tell the whole story in North Carolina. Democrats have long outnumbered Republicans in the state, even though voters sided with GOP presidential candidates for decades. Democratic registration has fallen by about 90,000 since the end of 2008, while unaffiliated voters have increased by more than 250,000. Republican registration is up by about 5,000 during that same timeframe.
A shortage of independent polls in North Carolina makes the state's status 40 days out hard to judge. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll out Thursday showed Obama leading Romney among likely voters 48 percent to 46 percent.
But both parties say the race is tight.
"Changing demographics have made this state more competitive than past years," said Robert Reid, Romney's North Carolina communications director. But he expressed confidence that the lagging economy would help the Republican win a close contest.
"The race is, and has been, within the margin of error," said Ken Eudy, a veteran Democratic strategist in North Carolina.
North Carolina's rapid transition from a GOP stalwart to a presidential battleground has largely been due to increased voter registration of African-Americans and Hispanics, as well as of transplants from the Northeast.
They're people like Diana Hrabosky, a Democrat who just moved to the state and registered to vote on Wednesday with an Obama campaign volunteer. And Walter Woody III, who recently turned 18 and is eligible to vote for the first time.
"It seems like no matter what race you are, people are starting to get more Democratic," said Woody, who is black, after he finished filling out a registration form.
This year, Romney's campaign was determined not to get caught off guard in North Carolina like GOP nominee John McCain was four years ago. Republicans have built a more substantial ground operation here, but still trail Obama in manpower. The president has 53 field offices across North Carolina to Romney's 24.
About 1.6 million people in North Carolina, or one-fourth of the electorate, are registered to vote but not affiliated with a party.
Paul Shumaker, a Republican consultant who has handled statewide races, said those voters may present just as many problems for Romney as the Democrats.
"Having to go through a Republican primary that pulled him to the right hurts him in building a winning coalition in the state," Shumaker said.
Theresa Jeffers is one of the unaffiliated voters siding with Romney ? though she says it's more a vote against Obama than in favor of the Republican.
"I was hoping so much that he would be successful," Jeffers, 64, said of the president. She said she's been disappointed by his performance in office, particularly on the debt.
Romney is hoping millions of dollars in television advertisements will convince more voters like Jeffers to side with him. The candidate and his GOP allies have spent more than $32 million on ads in North Carolina, including $2 million last week alone.
Obama and Democrats have spent nearly $18 million on North Carolina advertising. But their rate of weekly spending has slowed, down about half from their peak in the summer. Obama's campaign is also not running the costly two-minute ad it released Thursday in the state.
Neither candidate has devoted much time on the ground in North Carolina. Romney has made four trips to the state, while Obama has been here three times, including during the Democratic Party's convention in Charlotte earlier this month. But their running mates and wives have been frequent visitors.
Obama had planned to deliver his acceptance speech at a Charlotte football stadium with seating for 74,000 and use the gathering for voter registration and recruitment. But the outdoor event was canceled, with Democrats blaming the weather and Republicans accusing the president of not being able to draw a capacity crowd.

Have you ever been affected by an artificial time line? Yes...let me answer this question for you. Of course you have, we all have. In our personal lives, it is often occasioned by the fear of being judged...or actually being judged.
I was reminded of this when I was "caught" talking to a MAN (imagine that) I didn't know.?A friend took me out to listen to some music. Merry Widow? Too soon? Disrespectful? I think not! I didn't take him home...sheesh!
In business, it can actually harm your client, and your pocketbook. I had a closing today which brought this point home to me in a very big way. I know this is NOT typical...and is?almost?miracle, but it happened. I learned a lesson.
Last Monday?I got an email from a prospect in my database about a home. We ran out to see it and she wanted to write an offer. It was a bank-owned property and vacant. She wanted to close in?2 weeks.
Ok...maybe! Will this be all cash?
Then she handed me a prequal letter. Ok...slow down. "There is no way you can close with financing in 2 weeks." I very confidently assured her that she had no shot. Since we closed today....I was wrong. In fact, we not only closed (yes, the lender was Batman) but we closed a day before we had thought and the? REO bank gave her some extra concessions because she was closing before the end of the month.
Her lender was a small boutique bank. They handled everything quickly and efficiently and we closed. Saturday, she is heading out of town and out of touch. Headed to the outback to work with natives for 1 month. Had we not had loan documents before she left....we would not have closed at all, or at least not until she resurfaced. I wrote the offer to have a 45 day close, because there was no way we could get it done.
I was wrong!
I learned not to rely just on the "set in stone" rules. Certainly this is not normal. We all know this. But in my own personal journey, I've learned not to judge based on timetables. In this case? It paid off for my client.

Outstanding high school poets are being honored with a new award at the National Book Festival in Washington and will serve as literary ambassadors to the nation.
On Sunday, officials will honor the first five teen literary ambassadors. They are: Luisa Banchoff of Arlington, Va., Miles Hewitt of Vancouver, Wash., Claire Lee of New York City, Natalie Richardson of Oak Park, Ill., and Lylla Younes of Alexandria, La.
Each wins $5,000 and will present readings and workshops at libraries, museums and schools. They will also complete service projects to build awareness about creative writing.
Michelle Obama and the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities helped create the National Student Poets program. The winners were chosen from writers who received national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for poetry.

Giant Panda Cub Dies At Washington National Zoo

WASHINGTON, D.C. (REUTERS)?
The giant panda cub born at the National Zoo just one week ago died on Sunday, zoo officials said.?While the exact cause of the baby panda's death is yet to be determined, zoo officials said the cub, which weighed just under 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces), was in good body condition and that there were no outward signs of trauma or infection.
?The cub's death was discovered Sunday morning after panda keepers and zoo volunteers heard a distress vocalization from its mother, Mei Xiang.
?The panda cam that allowed the public to watch the baby and its mother over the Internet was turned off and zoo staff retrieved the body for evaluation.
?The unnamed cub was born on September 16 after five years of failed efforts at conception. Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang was described as a good mother. At the time of the birth, zoo officials had said the first month of life was crucial in the life of a panda cub.
?This was Mei Xiang's second cub. She gave birth to her first cub, Tai Shan, July 9, 2005. Tai Shan is now at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong.

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - At least twice a day, representatives of New Era execute raids of foreign factories in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, where knock-off caps are made.
But the vast majority of counterfeit hats, about 98 percent, are made in China and shipped to the U.S. to the tune of three million each year.
New Era is able to seize just a third of the fakes.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is proposing federal assistance so New Era can protect 700 local jobs, which the company says are threatened by foreign fakes.

The MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston wants to spend as much as $3 billion over the next decade reducing deaths related to several types of cancer or even curing those diseases altogether.
Doctors at the hospital and cancer research center, the largest in the country, announced their "Moon Shots" program this week, so called because it is inspired by President John F. Kennedy's pledge in the 1960s to put a man on the moon.
"The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has launched an ambitious and comprehensive action plan, called the Moon Shots Program, to make a giant leap for patients ? to dramatically accelerate the pace of converting scientific discoveries into clinical advances that reduce cancer deaths," the hospital says on its website. "The nation?s No. 1 hospital for cancer care, with its unparalleled resources and capabilities, is uniquely positioned to accelerate the end of cancer. It?s closer than you think. What?s learned from these initial cancer ?moon shots? will ultimately lead to cures for all types of the disease."
Some of the cancers the hospital will focus on include ovarian, breast, lung, prostate, melanoma and leukemia.
"Even as the number of cancer survivors in the US is expected to reach an estimated 11.3 million by 2015, according to the American Cancer Society, cancer remains one of the most destructive and vexing diseases," the center said in a release announcing the new program. "An estimated 100 million people worldwide are expected to lose their lives to cancer in this decade alone. The disease?s devastation to humanity now exceeds that of cardiovascular disease, tuberculosis, HIV and malaria ? combined."

In her mid-50s, menopause was not on Jennifer?s radar.? That was until early last year.? ?One day, I was sitting at my desk and I felt a very cold sensation run from the top of my head to my neck,? she told Flair of her first symptom.

HBT: Kershaw could pitch for Dodgers on Sunday
Clayton Kershaw threw a 20-pitch bullpen session this afternoon and manager Don Mattingly indicated that there?s a chance he could return from a hip injury to start for the Dodgers as soon as Sunday.
That would be a huge change from just a few days ago, when the Dodgers feared Kershaw might need season-ending hip surgery that would likely sideline him into 2013.
For now Aaron Harang is scheduled to start Sunday on three days? rest, which Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times notes would be his first short-rest start since 2008.
As for who?ll make the call regarding Kershaw? availability, Mattingly said:
It?s going to have to be the medical people saying he?s passed every test and he?s cleared every hurdle. It?s not going to be my decision. It?s an organizational decision with Clayton. Does it make sense? That?s really more than a manager?s decision. When you have a guy with his kind of arm and his upside, you?re not going to leave that decision only in my hands.
That sounds about right. Don Mattingly is a lot of things, but doctor isn?t one of them and allowing Kershaw to pitch through a hip injury that had everyone in Los Angeles holding their breath all week would be a major decision.

UK regulator finds BSkyB 'fit and proper'
LONDON (AP) ? British Sky Broadcasting is a "fit and proper" company to hold an operating license, U.K. regulators said Thursday in response to the phone hacking scandal that engulfed the parent company. But it criticized the former CEO and chairman, James Murdoch, for poor management.
The company's license was called into question because of the scandal at a newspaper owned by News Corp., which effectively controls BSkyB through a 39 percent shareholding.
If the company had not be found "fit and proper" it could have been stripped of the license that yielded a net profit of $1.4 billion in the year ending June 30.
The Office of Communications, known as Ofcom, concluded that James Murdoch was not complicit in a cover up at the tabloid News of the World, but his failure to initiate appropriate action on a number of occasions was "difficult to comprehend and ill-judged."
The report also found no evidence that Rupert Murdoch, James' father and CEO of News Corp., "acted in a way that was inappropriate in relation to phone hacking, concealment or corruption by employees" of his British newspapers.
Though Ofcom said it might review the situation if there are further revelations, the decision removed any immediate threat of BSkyB losing its license. The company's shares were up 0.9 percent at 733.5 pence in late morning trading in London.
"After a lengthy review process, we are pleased that Ofcom has now reached its conclusion and we look forward to continuing to develop our business for the benefit of customers and shareholders alike," BSkyB said in a statement.
News Corp. also welcomed the regulator's decision but contended that some statements about James Murdoch were "not substantiated by evidence."
James Murdoch became executive chairman of News Group Newspapers ? publisher of The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World ? and its parent company News International ? which also owns The Times newspapers ? in January 2008 and held the position until February this year. Both companies are ultimately owned by News Corp.
The phone hacking scandal, along with other allegations, has spawned investigations by a Parliamentary committee, a formal inquiry led by a judge, criminal charges against some journalists ? including Rebekah Brooks, former chief executive of News International ? and civil suits which forced the company to pay large settlements.
Public outrage following reports that the phone of a young murder victim had been hacked also led to News Corp. deciding two years ago to drop its bid to take full control of BSkyB.
Ofcom noted contradictory evidence by James Murdoch and two former senior employees about when Murdoch became aware that phone hacking at the News of the World went far beyond the company's long-standing claim that it involved a single rogue reporter and a private detective.
However, it said there was no evidence that he knew of "widespread wrongdoing or criminality" at News of the World.
The regulator limited itself to criticizing James Murdoch's actions as company director.
"We consider James Murdoch's conduct, including his failure to initiate action on his own account on a number of occasions, to be both difficult to comprehend and ill-judged."
Since February, James Murdoch has been a non-executive director of the company, and one of only four people on the 12-member board with connections to News Corp.
In May, the House of Commons' Culture, Media and Sport Committee concluded that Rupert Murdoch was "not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company." That conclusion, on a partisan split of 6-4, had no practical effect, however.
In its statement, News Corp. said it was pleased that Ofcom found that evidence related to misdeeds at the newspapers "does not provide any basis to conclude that News Corp. and Rupert Murdoch acted in a way that was inappropriate, and that there is similarly no evidence that James Murdoch deliberately engaged in any wrongdoing."
"We disagree, however, with certain of the report's statements about James Murdoch's prior actions as an executive and Director, which are not at all substantiated by evidence," News Corp. said.

Ice Hockey is a very popular sport in Canada and it is also the winter national sport there. Ice hockey is played on ice hockey with curved sticks and a puck. Rulebook of International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is used in both amateur and professional hockey leagues.

At professional level rules are changed or introduced to make the game more interesting and exciting to the spectators. The rules of ice hockey Canada and USA hockey are different primarily in technical matters, like the severity of the penalties handed out for different fouls. The rules of IIHF differs because of the differences in the dimensions of the North American hockey rinks from the rest of the world. These different leagues are trying to move towards the same direction. Hockey Canada and USA Hockey are trying to make their rulebook more similar to the international rulebook, so that a standardized rulebook can be created.
Evolving separately from amateur rules is the reason of NHL being different from others. In past few years of NHL games, the low scores has started a debate on change of wide variety of rules that include enlarging the size of the goal, to make offensive zone larger, breaking ties with penalty shot shootout, eliminating two line pass and restricting where goaltender handles can handle the puck.
In IIHF rulebook there are five sections, which are ice rink, teams, players and equipment, officials and their duties, playing rules and the fifth is penalties. Since 1908, IIHF has been developing, promoting and governing the men's and women's inline and ice hockey all over the world. IIHF also handles the promotion and sponsorships of the games by using media and other methods. IIHF has about 63 member-nations. Number of members of IIHF were steadily increased during 1980s and 90s. Greece, Ireland, Brazil, Chinese Taipei, India, Thailand and Namibia are some of those countries which became member of the IIHF in last 15 years.
