Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Thursday that a failure to pass a budget deal would have dangerous consequences for the global economy and weaken America's standing in the world.

Clinton spoke at the Brookings Institute, where she outlined the state of the relationship between Europe and America. Clinton called a weak economic future on either side of the Atlantic one of the greatest threats to global security and transatlantic relations.

While she stressed that Europe needs to continue to fix problems with the euro zone, she also had a message for Washington.

"If we're serious about strengthening our economic ties, we each need to build stronger foundations at home," Clinton said. "For the United States, this means making tough political choices, it means investing in our own competitiveness to set the platform for stronger economic growth. And it means addressing our domestic fiscal challenges.

"Washington is gearing up for another round of budget negotiations and I am again hearing the concerns of the global implications of America's economic choices," she said. "And although I am now out of politics, let me assure you that for all the differences between the political parties here we are united in our commitment to protect American leadership and bolster our national security. Reaching a meaningful budget deal is critical to both. This is a moment once again to prove the resilience of our economic system and reaffirm American leadership in the world. "

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, said today that fiscal cliff negotiations were not making any progress, but Democrats denied that.

Gilda?s Club is a network of cancer charities that help patients cope with the disease. It is named after Gilda Radner, an original Saturday Night Live cast member, who died in 1989 of ovarian cancer. She said the disease gave her ?membership in an elite club I?d rather not belong to.? The Madison,?Wisconsin?branch of the organization announced they?re changing their name to the Cancer Support Community in January 2013, leaving Gilda?s legacy behind, and other branches are following suit. This isn?t okay.

In 2009, Gilda?s Club joined with The Wellness Community to form the Cancer Support Community, but local branches of Gilda?s Club kept their name. Until now. The executive director of Gilda?s Club Madison, Lannia Syren said, ?One of the realizations we had this year is that our college students were born after Gilda Radner passed, as we are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis.?

The concern on their end seems to be that young cancer patients won?t come to them for help because they don?t know who Gilda Radner is, so the name no longer conveys what the organization does. It?s understandable that they want to make it clear to people what they do, but why not change the name to Gilda?s Cancer Support Community. Her quote about being in an ?elite club? is a good line, but it can be forgotten. She shouldn?t be.

The Bear State, the Land of Opportunity and the Wonder State have all been past nicknames of Arkansas. The Arkansas Fisheries Society takes pride in Arkansas? current nickname of the Natural State as it aims to utilize the state?s natural water resources and wildlife for environmental purposes.

There are over 100 American Fisheries Society chapters nationwide, with a total of over 9,000 members.

?The mission of the American Fisheries Society is to improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals,? said Dustin Lynch, Ph.D. student and AFS president. ?We promote interest in this through activities such as involving education, recreation and environmental cleanup.?

The national organization was founded in 1870 as the American Fish Culturists? Association, according to the national website. The dues are $20 for a student member and $80 for a regular member.

?The Arkansas Fisheries society at the UA currently has around 15 members,? Lynch said. ?People can join by sending a message to the AFS Facebook page with email contact info, and we will include them on our mailing list with time and place for the meetings.?

The UA chapter of AFS is also involved with the state chapter, and in September of 2013, the national AFS meeting will be held in Little Rock, Ark.

?This past spring, several members of the club attended the Arkansas chapter of the American Fisheries Society meeting,? said Brad Austin, biological sciences Ph.D. student. ?At the meeting, members learned about research in the fields of stream ecology and fisheries, providing an experience that members would not normally get in the classroom.?

The Natural State has hundreds of lakes to fish in, according to Arkansas.com, but many people are still foreign to the sport. AFS is mainly comprised of experienced members who are avid about having new members engage in their hobby. AFS envisions a future where worldwide fishery? production is optimized and sustained while structural and functional conditions of marine, freshwater and estuarine ecosystems are maintained, according to the national website.

?Currently, our membership consists mainly of undergraduate and graduate students within the department of biological sciences,? said Brad Austin, biological sciences Ph.D. student. ?So, one of our goals is to increase our membership, bringing in members from across campus.?

AFS has a division specifically for ?fish culture,? which was formed in 1974, according to the national AFS website. The local chapter in Arkansas also participates in promoting and engaging in fish culture.

?Fish culture refers to advancing cultivation technology of aquatic organisms for food, commercial and recreational fisheries enhancement, ornamental purposes, and conservation, emphasizing things like nutrition, economics, breeding, et cetera,? Lynch said.

The AFS national website has a tab for job postings so that members have the opportunity to apply for graduate assistant, research and full-time jobs within the organization?s many fields.

?This RSO has provided the ability to invite speakers in to talk about their work in the field of fisheries management,? Austin said. ?I think this is good for myself and other members because it makes us aware of the potential jobs that we are preparing ourselves for in the fields of fisheries management and stream ecology.?

The Arkansas Fisheries Society is close in friendship among its members, but it is also involved with other RSOs on campus.

The club assisted in putting on a booth with Springfest 2011 with the biological graduate student association, Austin said. ?With our booth, BGSA members talk about the impacts of improper waste disposal and not recycling our trash on the environment, while the AFS club focuses on the diversity of organisms that can be found in local streams, and in the past our booth has included live fish and bugs that kids can touch and/or hold.?

The RSO began in the spring of 2011, and since then it has focused on creating clearer lakes. Members participate in cleaning up the area around Lake Fayetteville every semester. ASF allows those who enjoy the outdoors of Arkansas to be in an organization that brings a diverse group of fish culture interests together.

?The types of people who join this organization are varied and have a wide variety of interests and reasons for joining,? Lynch said. ?A lot of people are primarily into sport fishing for recreation, and game fish species. I actually am not a fisherman myself and have more of an interest in smaller non-game stream fish, their ecology and conservation. It?s an organization that encompasses a lot of different interests.?

Oil prices fell Tuesday as traders remained unsure whether positive U.S. economic news signals an increase in fuel demand.

Traders weighed news that might have been expected to push oil prices higher. U.S. holiday spending and consumer confidence both rose. And negotiations over the next installment on Greece's bailout proved successful.

However, some analysts warned that it's still not clear that demand for oil is picking up.

Oil prices could get a short-term lift from the Greece deal, said Edward Bell, a commodities analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit. Indeed, oil rose in overnight trading after the Greek deal was announced. But prices turned negative in morning trading in the U.S.

Crude oil fell 56 cents to close at $87.18 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"The eurozone has not yet escaped its economic woes and there are no clear signs of a recovery in demand, meaning we expect there will be a drag on oil prices going into 2013," Bell said.

At the pump, the national average for a gallon of regular fell a fraction of a penny from Monday's price to $3.419, according to AAA.

Brent crude, which is used to set prices for many international varieties of oil, fell $1.05 to $109.87 a barrel on London's ICE Futures exchange.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline for December delivery rose 0.58 cent to $2.7321 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 3.9 cents to $3.769 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 3.71 cents to $3.0094 a gallon.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Digoxin, a drug widely used to treat heart disease, increases the possibility of death when used by patients with a common heart rhythm problem ? atrial fibrillation (AF), according to new study findings by University of Kentucky researchers. The results have been published in the European Heart Journal, and raises serious concerns about the expansive use of this long-standing heart medication in patients with AF.

UK researchers led by Dr. Samy Claude Elayi, associate professor of medicine at UK HealthCare's Gill Heart Institute, analyzed data from 4,060 AF patients enrolled in the landmark Atrial Fibrillation Follow-up Investigation of Rhythm Management (AFFIRM) trial. This analysis was intended to determine the relationship between digoxin and deaths in this group of patients with atrial fibrillation, and whether digoxin was directly responsible for some deaths.

"These findings raise important concerns about the safety of digoxin, one of the oldest and most controversial heart drugs," said Dr. Steven E. Nissen, chair of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. "Although considered obsolete by some authorities, digoxin is still widely used. A thorough review by the FDA is warranted to determine whether regulatory action is needed, including stronger warnings about the use of digoxin in patients with atrial fibrillation. "

Digoxin is extracted from the foxglove plant and it helps the heart beat more strongly, and at a slower heart rate. It is commonly used in AF patients and in patients with heart failure. However, it can be problematic to use successfully as there is a narrow dose range at which it is effective, and beyond which it can be dangerous.

Though digoxin has been used by physicians treating AF for decades, until now, there has been limited evidence demonstrating the effect of digoxin in patients with this condition. "Digoxin in AF patients has hardly been studied," said Elayi. "The main prospective randomised controlled trials available with digoxin were performed in patients with heart failure and sinus rhythm, and routinely excluded AF patients."

The results of the analysis found that digoxin was associated with a 41 percent increase in deaths from any cause after controlling for other medications and risk factors. An increase in deaths occurred regardless of gender or the presence or absence of underlying heart failure. Digoxin was also associated with a 35 percent increase in deaths from cardiovascular causes, and a 61 percent increase in deaths from arrhythmias or problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat.

"Within five years of use, one additional AF patient out of six taking digoxin ? compared to those not on digoxin in the AFFIRM trial? will die from any cause," Elayi said. "One additional patient out of eight will die from cardiovascular causes, and one additional patient out of 16 will die from arrhythmias.

"This study calls into question the widespread use of digoxin in patients with AF, particularly when used for controlling AF rate in a similar way as in the AFFIRM trial," Elayi said. "These findings suggest that physicians should try to control a patient's heart rate by using alternatives such as beta-blockers or calcium blockers ,as a first line treatment.

"If digoxin is used, prescribers should use a low dose with careful clinical follow up, evaluate potential drug interactions when starting new medications, and monitor digoxin levels."

In addition, patients should also be aware of potential toxicity and see their physicians immediately in specific clinical situations, he said. For instance, if they experience increasing nausea, vomiting, palpitations or syncope, as those may precede arrhythmic death, Elayi added.

The researchers say that the mechanism by which digoxin increases deaths among patients is unclear. Deaths from classic cardiovascular causes -- whether or not they are due to arrhythmia -- can partly but not entirely explain it. This suggests there must be some additional mechanism that remains to be identified, said Elayi.

"Our study underscores the importance of reassessing the role of digoxin in the contemporary management of AF in patients with or without HF," concluded the authors in their paper. "There is a need for further studies of the drug's use, particularly in systolic heart failure patients and AF -- patients that would, in theory, benefit the most from digoxin."

CONAKRY (Reuters) - President Alpha Conde said on Sunday Guinea would go on fighting corruption despite the murder of the West African country's treasury director, a champion of the anti-graft movement.

Aissatou Boiro was shot dead by unidentified attackers in military uniforms as she was returning home in the capital Conakry in her car on Friday. Several passengers in the car were wounded.

"Aissatou Boiro worked tirelessly against corruption in our young democracy," said Conde, elected in 2010 on promises he would tackle endemic corruption in the world's top supplier of the aluminium ore bauxite.

"Even though she was taken from us in a terrible way, her work will not be in vain. Despite the difficulties, our fight against corruption will continue. Our country has come too far to turn back now," Conde said in a statement.

Under long-time ruler Lansana Conte and the military junta that seized power following his death in 2008, the treasury's funds were routinely stolen.

Conde, whose election ended military rule, named Boiro to head the treasury eight months ago and she dismantled a network of government officials and private businessmen who had conspired to embezzle around $1.8 million earlier this year.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive behind her killing.

Guinea secured $2.1 billion in debt relief from the World Bank and the IMF Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative.

The debt relief was considered a vote of international confidence in Guinea's transition back to civilian rule after the 2008 military coup hampered its economy, discouraged investment, and led partners to freeze aid.

Lost in the hubbub over Ronda Rousey's admittance to the UFC last night was the fact that she's not the only woman who will be in the UFC. Unless Rousey will be fighting air or a man, she will need a female opponent.

Miesha Tate, the only fighter to last more than a minute with Rousey, said on Twitter that she will be a part of the UFC.

Since losing by arm bar to Rousey, Tate rehabbed the arm injury she sustained in the loss. She then beat Julie Kedzie with an armbar of her own. If this were a perfect world, she would win another fight to earn a shot against Rousey. But this world is not perfect, and as the Jon Jones-Chael Sonnen title bout reminded us, the UFC wants to make dollars, not sense.

For that reason, expect Tate to be Rousey's first opponent. Their fight in March generated a boatload of buzz as the two women continually called each other out. The card they headlined averaged 431,000 viewers and peaked at 560,000 for their bout. Considering this was on a premium network that costs viewers extra to view, it bodes well for their future as a pay-per-view draw.

There are other candidates to fight Rousey. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos was the most dominant woman in MMA until she was suspended for using a banned substance. Her suspension will end in mid-December, but she has had trouble getting down to 145 lbs., much less the 135-lb. weight to challenge for Rousey's bantamweight belt. In our Filipino culture, it is accepted, and we are not shocked, when acquaintances come up to us and say outright ?you look fat!? or ?you look old!? Surely we?re used to it, but it may add into the growing popularity of anti-oxidant and anti-aging products around.

So why do our bodies? age? There are 2 main schools of thought when it comes to aging:

1. Structural

There are several theories on aging that goes deep to the study of cells, but the 2 most popular are the ?wear and tear? theory where the changes in a person?s body is the accumulation of its everyday use, like a machine that?s brand new compared to one that is 10 years old, for example; and another popular one is the free-radical theory. Free radicals are atoms or molecules that has an unpaired electron (remember chemistry way back?) because of a chemical reaction. These reactions also occur in our cells and free radicals accumulate in our cells causing cellular damage ? and speeds up the aging process. The accumulation of free radicals is further induced by our environment, e.g. industrial smoke, chemicals, pesticides, radiation, etc..

2. Genetic

There are also a number of theories that went further into the study of genes and DNA. Simply put, there are a number of genes that attribute to longer life spans of people. We see this theory in real life as traits in particular families, where children live around the same life span as their parents. What was interesting is a study on ?centenarians? done by Dr. Thomas Perls of Harvard School of Medicine. Centenarians, as the name suggests, are people who have lived for more than 100 years and Dr. Perls did his study in a geriatric rehabilitation center. Dr. Perls assumption, (as my assumption, and perhaps your assumption would be the same), is that the oldest residents of the center would be the ?sickest? residents. But this is not necessarily so, as it turns out. Those that live for a long time, e.g. >90 years, are those that are free of degenerative diseases while their contemporaries who have live relatively shorter life spans, have developed heart disease or type II diabetes at say, 40 or 50 years of age.

Our genes don?t necessarily predict our life span and the diseases that we will have. Our genes are not ?magic mirrors? that tell us neither the future nor a ?curse? on what?s to come to us in the future. Rather, it?s a tendency. The ability to live a long and healthy life is a combination of both our genetic disposition and our lifestyle, and the 2 schools of thought about aging shows this.

Where there are free radicals there are anti-oxidants:

Since these chemical reactions, free radicals, occur naturally in our bodies, our bodies also have natural systems that work to get rid of these free radicals. We call them antioxidant enzyme systems, there are 3 but the most popular that we all know is that of the enzyme, glutathione. Yes, our bodies produce our own anti-oxidants and one of them is glutathione. How it works is that the anti-oxidants are molecules with an atom that has an extra space for the electron from the free-radical.

So there is actually a lot of science behind the different glutathione products, or rather, since we cannot use glutathione per se, substances that become or stimulate the production of glutathione in our bodies. And there are many more anti-oxidants; the most common are 3 vitamins, A, C and E.

One tip for those of us that are taking anti-oxidant supplements: Take different kinds of anti-oxidants because different anti-oxidants work at different parts of the body and anti-oxidants stimulate other anti-oxidants, especially those that are already in our bodies.

Another tip, is to remember that our environment adds more free-radicals to our bodies, let?s be conscious about how we live, where we spend most of our time, what we breathe, what we use and what we eat ? stay as natural (unprocessed) and organic as we can.
