NIOSH announced on July 23, 2012, the release of a new resource designed to guide small business owners through the vast array of occupational safety and health information. The NIOSH press release mentions that small businesses represent an important part of the U.S. economy, but often they are not able to have staff dedicated solely to addressing workplace safety and health. The Small Business Safety and Health Resource Guide is?intended to help busy small business owners looking for resources on regulations, training materials, and recommendations.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, 70% of workplaces in the country employ less than 20 people. However these companies suffer higher fatality rates on average compared to larger organizations, as per a 2006 RAND report. The task of looking after workplace safety and health is often delegated to Human Resources personnel or other staff who are already occupied with their primary employment duties. This may create a barrier for small businesses trying to navigate through technical safety and health documents to understand what information is critical for them to know.

The Small Business Safety and Health Resource Guide contains summaries of and links to more than 50 websites produced by commercial, academic, and government organizations. NIOSH says that each resource included was reviewed for relevance, ease of use, cost, and credibility. The resource guide is divided in the following six sections: General Information (including EHS freeware), Regulations, Guides and Courses (including training materials and toolkits), Consultation Services, Specific Occupations and Hazards (such as construction, health care, manufacturing, retail, etc.), and Emergency Preparedness. Based on readers? feedback and their use of the guide, NIOSH will continue to update it to keep it current.
