I believe in "buy American" when it's possible, but it's getting harder and harder to find American made products. I am looking to upgrade my stereo system in my Camaro and I am a member of a Camaro forum. Several guys on the forum have recommended I purchase from Internet companies such as Crutchfield. I mentioned that I always try to support local companies unless it just doesn't make sense to do so. It was like I was taking a foreign language. I will buy a system from a local stereo company and will likely be able to find exactly what I want.

Is it that unusual to support local companies in your area? I buy my electronic stuf locally, I have local companies do repairs on stuff, I try to buy fishing equipment and/or tackle from local companies as well. Even if the prices are a little higher I will usually still buy from them.

I know that buying online is certainly more convenient and often offers more selection. As with trying to buy American, it's becoming more difficult to find a local company that has what you are looking for but I believe it's worth the effort.

Just wondering how much effort others make to buy local.

Depends on what I'm buying.

Gasoline and ammunition I buy locally.
Prescriptions, electronics and oatmeal on-line.

http://www.buyamerican.com

Recommended to me by my CPA.

I tend to buy local for things that don't ship.

I try and always buy local even if it means spending a few extra dollars.

I am buying some new logo shirts for my business and know I can get them cheaper on line but I am going to use a local shop. The bad news is all of the shirts appear to be made elsewhere.

I'm the same way about buying local. As long as there's someone local that's reputable. There's a local (Family owned) appliance store that has been real good to me. I won't even go anywhere else for appliances.

But like your experience pointed out, these days, buying local doesn't necessarily equate to buying American.

Specifically on the subject of vehicles, I used to be a staunch buy American guy. However, about 12 years ago, I started reading about how many jobs like mine (I'm an IT guy) the big 3 automakers were sending off shore. For that reason, I changed my thinking about autos and started buying foriegn. My thinking is, if the big 3 aren't going to buy American when it comes to what I'm selling, why should I go out of my way to buy American when it comes to what they're selling. When they start bringing those off shore jobs back on shore, I'll go back to buying strictly American automobiles.

Yes, a lot of mom and pops prosper where I live. We are in fairly rural Georgia, nearest Walmart is over 20 miles away.

Give them time and they will be building a Wallyworld near you !

Buying locally, I usually get okay service, limited selection, inflated prices, and poor (biased) advice.

Buying on the internet I get zero service, infinite selection, the cheapest price possible, and the best possible advice.

BTW: Crutchfield is an interesting example you chose. Their business model is basically to be a premium online/catalog retailer, focusing on service instead of price. So basically they are the "friendly hometown mom and pop shop" on the internet. They are expensive but generally considered worth it for the service (if you need it).
