Google Sending Ads As Email - Business Insider

?

Google is starting to send advertisements as e-mails, Stephen Shankland of CNET reports.

The messages appear in a section of Gmail's new multi-tab inbox called "Promotions." Just like a regular email, you can forward the ads to friends and family.

When Google first introduced the new layout in May, it seemed as if the Promotions tab would simply filter offers you already receive from services like LivingSocial or Google Offers. But now it appears that any ad has a chance of landing in your inbox.

Google has displayed ads at the top of the inbox for a while now. But these new ads will be more relevant and less intrusive, Google said in a statement to Venture Beat. That means sometimes you may not see any ads at all.

The ads are reportedly part of Gmail's Sponsored Promotions program, which is currently in limited beta.

Here's what they look like:

Study suggests young African American women who binge eat are more likely to report suicide attempts

Is binge eating a tell-tale sign of suicidal thoughts? According to a new study of African American girls, by Dr. Rashelle Musci and colleagues from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University in the US, those who experience depressive and anxious symptoms are often dissatisfied with their bodies and more likely to display binge eating behaviors. These behaviors put them at higher risk for turning their emotions inward, in other words, displaying internalizing symptoms such as suicide. The study is published online in Springer's journal, Prevention Science.

With the focus on appearance in Western culture, it is not uncommon for many girls and women to have eating behavior problems. The most frequently occurring problem eating behaviors are binge eating, or eating large amounts of food in a short period of time and feeling out of control while eating. This behavior leads to shame, embarrassment, distress and an attempt to conceal it.

Musci and team investigated how depressive and anxious symptoms may be precursors to binge eating behaviors and suicidal outcomes in 313 black females followed for 11 years, from the ages of approximately 6-17 years old. Teacher, parent, and child interviews were carried out, examining levels of anxiety, depression, satisfaction with physical appearance, and eating behaviors, particularly binge eating. The researchers also noted who had reported a suicide attempt during the study period.

The African American females demonstrated dissatisfaction with their physical appearance, which predicted the development of depressive and anxious symptoms in adolescence. These, in turn, predicted binge eating behaviors. Adolescent girls with more binge eating behaviors also reported more suicide attempts.

The authors conclude: "The relationships found in this study offer prevention scientists a unique opportunity to target individuals at high risk of psychiatric problems by intervening in the case of binge eating problems. Our results also support the importance of developing prevention programs that are culturally relevant to individuals."

Recari jumps, Tseng falls from Top 10 in women's golf rankings

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 22 (UPI) -- Beatriz Recari jumps eight spots in women's world golf and Catriona Matthew reached No. 10 but former No. 1 Yani Tseng drops from the rankings' upper tier.

Recari won the Marathon Classic, the LPGA's stop in Sylvania, Ohio, on Sunday. She edged Paula Creamer by one stroke for her third LPGA title. She also won on the tour in March.

That moves her to 18th in the latest rankings while Creamer goes up three spots to from 14th to 11th.

Matthew is up two places to 10th while Tseng missed the cut for her third consecutive tournament. Tseng had been ranked No. 1 in the world for 109 weeks -- only Lorena Ochoa held the top spot longer -- but this week she falls an additional two places to 12th.

Tseng took over the No. 1 spot in February 2011 and Stacy Lewis passed her for the top position on March 18, 2013. She quickly dropped from there.

The LPGA, off this week, has the Ricoh Women's British Open Aug. 1-4. Current No. 1 Inbee Park will be going for the fourth of five major tournament titles this year. Women's golf recognizes five events -- the Evian Championship in France in September is the fifth -- as major tournaments.

The world women's golf Top 10 with player's name, home country and rankings point average:

1. Inbee Park, South Korea, 12.96

2. Stacy Lewis, United States, 8.07

3. Suzann Pettersen, Norway, 7.90

4. Choi Na-yeon, South Korea, 7.36

5. Ryu So-yeon, South Korea, 7.21

6. Feng Shanshan, China, 6.10

7. Karrie Webb, Australia, 6.10

8. Jiyai Shin. South Korea, 5.69

9. I.K. Kim, South Korea, 5.64

10. Catriona Matthew, Scotland, 5.44

Skipping Breakfast a Recipe for Heart Disease, Study Finds - Health ...

dont-skip-breakfast-400x400

By Dennis Thompson
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, July 22 (HealthDay News) ? Men who skip breakfast have a 27 percent higher risk of suffering a heart attack or developing heart disease than those who start the day with something in their stomach, according to a new study.

The study confirms earlier findings that have linked eating habits to elevated risk factors for heart disease, the Harvard researchers said.

?Men who skip breakfast are more likely to gain weight, to develop diabetes, to have hypertension and to have high cholesterol,? said Eric Rimm, senior author and associate professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health and associate professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School.

For example, breakfast skippers are 15 percent more likely to gain a substantial amount of weight and 21 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, earlier studies have reported.

The new study, published July 22 in the journal Circulation, found that these men also indulged more heavily in other unhealthy lifestyle choices. They were more likely to smoke, engage in less exercise and drink alcohol.

?We?ve focused so much on the quality of food and what kind of diet everyone should be eating, and we don?t talk as often on the manner of eating,? said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. ?This study is not even discussing the type of food. It?s just talking about behavior and lifestyle choice. Part of heart-healthy living is eating breakfast because that prevents you from doing a lot of other unhealthy things.?

For the new report, researchers analyzed data culled from a 16-year study of nearly 27,000 male health professionals that tracked their eating habits and overall health from 1992 to 2008. During the study period, 1,572 of the men developed heart disease.

The study also found a 55 percent increased risk of heart disease in men who regularly indulge in late-night snacking. However, the researchers did not consider this a public health risk because few men reported eating after they?d gone to bed.

Rimm said there are several possible explanations why skipping breakfast can have such a drastic effect on heart health.

The Harvard study found that men who skip breakfast do not pick up another meal later in the day, which Rimm said indicates that they tend to ?feast? on higher-calorie meals when they do eat. Previous studies have found that feasting can result in high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, compared with nibbling smaller meals.

?It?s the extra strain on the body of eating more calories during the few times in a day they do eat,? he said.

The type of food that a person consumes during breakfast also might be a factor. ?Breakfast is typically a time when people tend to eat a healthy meal,? Rimm said. ?By skipping a meal that usually features fiber or fruit or yogurt, you?re missing out on an occasion where people can get healthy nutrients.?

Younger men tend to skip breakfast more frequently than older men, the investigators found, which leads to another possible explanation. ?It may be in line with the fact that these are men who are rushing out to stressful jobs and not eating along the way,? Rimm said, noting that stress is bad for heart health and is associated with negative lifestyle choices such as drinking or smoking.

The study did not include women, but Steinbaum believes the same pattern likely occurs in women who skip breakfast. ?There haven?t been any studies independently on women, but I would suspect we would find the same outcomes,? she said.

Rimm said the study reinforces the age-old emphasis on breakfast as a key to good health.

?There is so much we know about reducing risk of heart disease, and some things like exercise or quitting smoking take quite a bit of effort,? Rimm said. ?But it is easy without a big huge financial or time commitment to have breakfast, even if it is a bowl of oatmeal or a bit of cereal before you start the day.?

The Dos And Don'ts Of Cosplaying While Black

Unless you count the time I dressed up as Left 4 Dead?s Louis for Halloween a few years back, I?ve never really done cosplay. I just don?t have the inclination for it.

But if I did I probably follow the handy guide provided by Break?s Ron Funches about who to dress up as. I don?t agree with all of his seals of approval but let?s just say that you?ll never see me with a gun for a hand like certain Final Fantasy characters mentioned above.
