Helpful Web Design Tips That Give Your Internet Presence A Boost
Many people are very interested in learning the fundamentals of web design, but the prospect of doing so can be intimidating. If you are interested in developing your web design skills, this article should be of particular interest to you. Keep reading and you will discover more about what it takes to design an ideal site. Want To Design Websites? Try These Great Tips
Look into the different resources available to you. Information is available in a variety of formats such as books, magazines and even online. Reading this information will help you become more skilled at web design over time.
Use sound elements sparingly, and with consideration for viewers, as you design your web pages. Refrain from bombarding your website's visitors with annoying sounds that they can't mute or control. You can add links with video and audio, but let the user choose whether or not to have audio as part of the experience of your website.
White space, or space that is unused and empty, is truthfully beneficial to a website, so don't think your site has to be chock full of pictures, graphics and content. It makes your site easier to read, and your content easier to remember.
Concept sketches are a great way to lay out your website before you begin to build it. This tool can be effective for designing the look and feel of the website, and also identifying any functional requirements that your website might have. This makes a great beginning point.
If you feel that advertising will be a valuable asset for your website, then be sure that keep it to a minimum. Too many ads will make your website look cluttered and spammy, and you might not be taken seriously. Limit your ads to those which are relevant to your content and target market.
Check link integrity on a regular basis. Make the check right before your upload it and make it available online. You want to avoid broken links, because they make your visitors especially frustrated by promising certain content and then failing to deliver it. To avoid this, check to make sure everything works.
You need adequate meta tags on every page to attract more site visitors. Having meta tags that are quality will help show the search engines what your site is about. If you do not have good meta tags that describe your site well, you are not going to attract many visitors to your site.

My mom always said that the most dangerous lies are the ones mixed with truth. That's why the internet, namely Twitter, can be such a spurious environment. We sometimes forget that with the real-time, viral benefits of the short-winded social network come the same negative effects. Truth can spread like wildfire, and so can lies. Today, the Bieber nation has learned that lesson. Behold, dear readers, the horror.
Progress in ultrasound-guided surgery may improve breast cancer treatmentPublic release date: 26-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

When surgeons operate to remove a tumor, determining exactly where to cut can be tricky. Ideally, the entire tumor should be removed while leaving a continuous layer of healthy tissue, but current techniques for locating the tumors during surgery are imprecise. Now a multidisciplinary team from the University of California, San Diego, is developing an alternate means of precisely tagging breast cancer tumors for removal or targeted destruction. They will present the results of their investigations at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 Nov. 2 in Tampa, Fla.
Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in the U.S., and the main cause of death in women ages 40-59, according to UptoDate, an information service for clinical physicians. Over a lifetime, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. is expected to develop breast cancer. Despite great strides in survival, there is trauma associated not only with the disease, but also with its treatment. Many women want to avoid a full mastectomy, but conventional breast-conserving approaches, such as lumpectomy, can be arduous. Up to 25 percent of lumpectomies require a second surgery to excise the entire tumor.
The UCSD team is working on a better method for tagging tumors that should reduce the need for follow-up surgeries. The researchers developed iron-doped and therefore biodegradable silica micro/nano spheres for implanting into the body as ultrasound contrast markers to guide a surgeon using ultrasound during breast lumpectomy. Additionally, the particles can also be used to destroy tumor tissue with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablative therapy, an approach used elsewhere in the world to treat prostate cancer and used in the U.S. to treat uterine fibroids.
If breast tumors are precisely marked, the number of second surgeries can be decreased by 50 percent, according to published studies using radiative tumor markers. Because the gas-filled nanoparticles that the researchers developed make tumors easier to see, they hold the potential for increasing surgical precision with a safe agent. Once injected into the breast cancer tumor, they stick, rendering the tumor more visible with contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
"We are trying to improve the markers surgeons use so they can pull the tumors out with more precision and ease, while reducing trauma for the patient," explains Alex Liberman, the PhD graduate student in the materials science and engineering program who has taken the concept from test tube to animal models. Adds his advisor, chemical physicist Andrew Kummel, PhD: "We are using these particles for two applications. In the short term we are injecting them into breast tumors to enable surgeons to halve the number of second surgeries by readily locating the tumors in the operating room with low- power ultrasound imaging. In the long term, we want to inject the particles intravenously, have them stick to the tumors, and then ablate the tumors by blowing up the particles with high intensity focus ultrasound which is called HIFU."
As now performed, the lumpectomy requires a surgeon to extract tumors through incisions in the breast with the aid of guide wires that protrude out of the breast to help locate the tumor. The wires are prone to movement, and therefore yield imprecise results. Furthermore, the wires are inserted while the patient is awake, which is unpleasant for the patient.
The next step for the team involves conducting more animal tumor studies. Those results will determine if the particles are suitable technology to submit to human clinical breast cancer trials as a localizing agent to guide lumpectomy surgery or even for HIFU therapy.

U.S. shoppers woke up with mild Surface fever on Friday, lining up in moderate numbers to buy Microsoft's groundbreaking tablet computer designed to challenge Apple's iPad.
The global debut of the Windows 8 operating system was greeted with pockets of enthusiasm, but not the mania reserved for some previous Apple launches.
Microsoft is positioning the slick new computing device, which runs a limited version of Windows and Office with a thin, click-on keyboard cover, as a perfect combination of PC and tablet that is good for work as well as entertainment.
"I like the flexibility of having the keyboard and the touch capability," said Mike Gipe, 50, who works in sales for bank Barclays, and was planning to buy a Surface tablet at Microsoft's pop-up store in Times Square in New York.
"It's the combination of having the consumer stuff and the work stuff," he said, looking forward to using Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations on the new device.
The Times Square store was the first to sell the Surface???Microsoft's first ever own-brand computer???and other Windows 8 devices late on Thursday and will be open through the holiday shopping season. On Friday morning it was crowded with a mix of tourists and local office workers, but the cash tills were not jammed.
"With the other tablets you're a consumer. With this you can have input," said Peter Townsend, on vacation in New York from Australia with his wife, who bought a Surface tablet because he liked the keyboard.
Mark Pauluch, 28, who works for a New York private equity firm, said he would like a Surface because he does not want to take a laptop on a plane, but was disappointed when the sales representative told him the wifi-only Surface would not work with Cisco VPN networking.
"I can't use this to replace my work laptop unless it supports VPN," he said.
Elsewhere in the United States, there was solid but not overwhelming interest for the Surface.
"It's a good tablet. I am not a huge i-anything fan, I like Windows," said Matt Shanahan, a software developer who drove four hours to the tiny Michigan Avenue pop-up store in Chicago from Grand Rapids, Michigan to buy a Surface. "My friend and I are software developers and this gives us an opportunity to develop new apps," he said.
In a pop-up store at the San Francisco Centre mall about 50 people lined up to buy the new Surface.
"On an iPad you have to use half the screen for a keyboard, or buy an accessory. I love that the Surface is so integrated, that you can type and use Word and all my other programs," said Malte von Sehested, a textbook creator who bought a Surface.
"With the Surface you get a steeper learning curve???I had to get someone to show me how to side-swipe, swipe out to get the menus for instance," he said. "It may take a week, before it all becomes natural. That could be a problem for Microsoft. My old dad, he would get hit by that steeper learning curve."
Wall Street and tech industry experts failed to show great enthusiasm for Windows 8, but were prepared to give Microsoft time to succeed.
"Microsoft did not come out with Windows 8 thinking it will be an overnight success," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "But there's hope that this could be the silver bullet of growth (for Microsoft) as well as giving the PC industry some optimism that there's better days ahead."
The next six to 12 months is a "crucial period" for Microsoft to get traction with consumers, added Ives.
Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at tech research firm Forrester, said consumers may be best served waiting for tablets running the full Windows 8 Pro and Intel chips, which are due out early next year.
"Windows 8 has a lot of great features, but RT has a long way to go," she said, citing a lack of apps and poor video performance on the Surface.
"It's not really a PC. RT is too restricted. Some people will be happier with the full Windows 8," she said.

In a typical city apartment or even smaller home, bathrooms are not always as large as you would like them to be, let alone as luxurious as you wish they could be. Older style homes often have baths with overhead showers, while modern homes are limited to showers alone. Luckily for you however, it is still possible to add more space to even the tiniest of bathrooms, allowing you to create an oasis of calm at the end of each day.
How to Add Space to Smaller Bathrooms
Depending on whether you wish to renovate the entire bathroom or simply add a few changes here and there, there are many different ways to add space to smaller bathrooms. Some ideas include the following:
If your bathroom has a bath only, adding a shower attachment can be done without too much drastic work. Ideally, this option works best if you have a single tap however, which allows the attachment to work with your existing plumbing. You can purchase attachments and install them yourself if you have sufficient DIY skills, or have them installed by your handyman or plumber if you prefer a professional job.
Fitting bathroom shelves is a simple way to add more storage. Wall mounted shelves can be attached using brackets, and used to keep towels, bath products and other items. You can also purchase wall cabinets if you have enough space, which can double up for storage and the all-important bathroom mirror.
Corner baths are a great way to optimise on limited space, taking up far less space than regular shaped baths. While this job is best left to the experts, it is worth considering if your bathroom only has a shower or if your current bath takes up a lot of room. As an added perk, many modern corner baths can be sunken, giving a luxurious touch to your bathroom.
Hooks and rails can also be added to maximise storage space without adding to the clutter, while from an aesthetic point of view, large mirrors placed over the bath will help add the illusion of space without making any major structural changes. As a final bit of advice, it is best to avoid dark colours or busy wallpaper in small bathrooms. Instead, stick to light, neutral shades to make the room seem larger and more spacious. Along with these tips, you will be able to create the perfect bathroom, regardless of its size.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Recycling keeps paper, plastics, and even jeans out of landfills. Could recycling rare-earth magnets do the same? Perhaps, if the recycling process can be improved.
Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Ames Laboratory are working to more effectively remove the neodymium, a rare earth element, from the mix of other materials in a magnet. Initial results show recycled materials maintain the properties that make rare-earth magnets useful.
The current rare earth recycling research builds on Ames Laboratory's decades of rare-earth processing experience. In the 1990s, Ames Lab scientists developed a process that uses molten magnesium to remove rare earths from neodymium-iron-boron magnet scrap. Back then, the goal was to produce a mixture of magnesium and neodymium because the neodymium added important strength to the alloy, rather than separate out high-purity rare earths because, at the time, rare earth prices were low.
But rare earth prices increased ten-fold between 2009 and 2011 and supplies are in question. Therefore, the goal of today's rare-earth recycling research takes the process one step farther.
"Now the goal is to make new magnet alloys from recycled rare earths. And we want those new alloys to be similar to alloys made from unprocessed rare-earth materials," said Ryan Ott, the Ames Laboratory scientist leading the research. "It appears that the processing technique works well. It effectively removes rare earths from commercial magnets."
Ott's research team also includes Ames Laboratory scientist Larry Jones and is funded through a work for others agreement with the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The research group is developing and testing the technique in Ames Lab's Materials Preparation Center, with a suite of materials science tools supported by the DOE Office of Science.
"We start with sintered, uncoated magnets that contain three rare earths: neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium," said Ott. "Then we break up the magnets in an automated mortar and pestle until the pieces are 2-4 millimeters long.
Next, the tiny magnet pieces go into a mesh screen box, which is placed in a stainless-steel crucible. Technicians then add chunks of solid magnesium.
A radio frequency furnace heats the material. The magnesium begins to melt, while the magnet chunks remain solid.
"What happens then is that all three rare earths leave the magnetic material by diffusion and enter the molten magnesium," said Ott. "The iron and boron that made up the original magnet are left behind."
The molten magnesium and rare-earth mixture is cast into an ingot and cooled. Then they boil off the magnesium, leaving just the rare earth materials behind.
"We've found that the properties of the recycled rare earths compare very favorably to ones from unprocessed materials," said Ott. "We're continuing to identify the ideal processing conditions."
The next step is optimizing the extraction process. Then the team plans to demonstrate it on a larger scale.
"We want to help bridge the gap between the fundamental science and using this science in manufacturing," said Ott. "And Ames Lab can process big enough amounts of material to show that our rare-earth recycling process works on a large scale."

Quantum Conundrum's Kim Swift (because I am tired of typing Portal creator) and her team at Airtight Games have undergone a startling epiphany?mobile phones can play games. They've launched Airtight Mobile to take advantage of this discovery, with the first of these "mobile phone games" dropping next week. It's called PIXLD.
From the official announcement press release:
PIXLD is Airtight's first release under the new Airtight Mobile brand, an innovative and unprecedented venture aiming to do the impossible: allow consumers to experience the joys of video gaming on their mobile telephones.
"Seriously, have you seen these things?" said PIXLD creative director Kim Swift, gesturing at Apple's sixth-generation iPhone. "They're like tiny computers. Tiny computers you carry in your pocket. So I'm all like, ?I know this sounds nuts, but guys, let's put some games on there.' And they did. Bam."
Man, if only I had known this sooner I wouldn't have given away my smart phones to the homeless.
PIXLD is a stunningly simple match game in which the player is challenged to make blocks of similar shades of blue. Touching one of the small bits on the screen swaps the color of it and all the bits around it. You can see where that my pose a problem.
"Is it risky betting on an emerging platform like iOS? You bet. But I have a feeling Apple just might be onto something here," added Swift. "Buying a video game that you can play on your phone for less than a cup of coffee? That's just crazy!"
That is kinda crazy. Even crazier is the fact that PIXLD will be released next week on iTunes for the introductory price of $.99?half off of the price you can figure out using math (hint?add a penny to your end result).
We'll have more on PIXLD once we figure out how to put games on our iPhones. What, we just set them on top or something?
REPORT FROM MAZIE HIRONO FOR US SENATE CAMPAIGN ? Today, legal counsel for Mazie Hirono?s U.S. Senate campaign sent a letter to Big Island radio station managers informing them that Linda Lingle?s campaign is currently running a radio advertisement that violates the Communications Act of 1934. Consequently, ?Lingle and her campaign have forfeited their entitlement to the lowest unit charge? for radio advertisements, and Big Island station managers should charge the Lingle campaign the same rate for broadcast time that they charge for non-political advertisers from now until Election Day.
As explained in the letter to Big Island radio stations, ?The Communications Act of 1934 permits a federal candidate receiving the lowest unit charge to air a radio advertisement that makes direct reference to another candidate for the same office only if, ?the broadcast includes a personal audio statement by the candidate that identifies the candidate, the office the candidate is seeking, and indicates that the candidate has approved the broadcast.? 47 U.S.C. ? 315(b)(2)(D) (emphasis added).... Lingle?s advertisement, which makes direct reference to her opponent, Senate candidate Mazie Hirono, does not meet this requirement. Although Lingle states her name and indicates her approval of the advertisement, she does not identify the office she is seeking.... Consequently, Lingle may no longer lawfully benefit from the lowest unit charge.?
The radio advertisement that violates the Communications Act of 1934 can be heard by clicking here: http://youtu.be/1N0l2BWmaB8. If the Lingle campaign disables this link, click here to listen to the radio advertisement: http://youtu.be/ybqOwAodIts.

Re: Linda Lingle Senate Committee Ad
Dear Big Island Station Manager:
We are counsel to Friends of Mazie Hirono. The purpose of this letter is to alert you to the fact that Linda Lingle and her authorized campaign committee, the Linda Lingle Senate Committee, are currently running an advertisement on your station[1] that violates the Communications Act of 1934. As a result, Lingle and her campaign have forfeited their entitlement to the lowest unit charge for the duration of the campaign. Now and until Election Day, your station should charge Lingle and her campaign committee the same rate for broadcast time that it charges non-political advertisers for comparable use.
The Communications Act of 1934 permits a federal candidate receiving the lowest unit charge to air a radio advertisement that makes direct reference to another candidate for the same office only if, "the broadcast includes a personal audio statement by the candidate that identifies the candidate, the office the candidate is seeking, and indicates that the candidate has approved the broadcast." 47 U.S.C. ? 315(b)(2)(D) (emphasis added). If a candidate does not comply with this requirement at any time during the sixty days preceding the general election, that candidate may not receive the lowest unit charge "for such broadcast or any other broadcast ? that occur on or after the date of such broadcast ?" Id. ? 315(b)(2)(B).
This is not a requirement of Federal Election Commission rules. Rather, it falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC"). A candidate's campaign must provide written certification to your station at the time of purchase that it will comply with this requirement. Id. ? 315(b)(2)(E). The purpose of the FCC requirement is to require candidates to demonstrate their support for the statements made in the preceding advertisement. Lingle's advertisement, which makes direct reference to her opponent, Senate candidate Mazie Hirono, does not meet this requirement.
Although Lingle states her name and indicates her approval of the advertisement, she does not identify the office she is seeking. Section 315 of the Communications Act specifically requires that the candidate identify the office she is seeking. Because Lingle does not identify the office she is seeking, the advertisement is in clear violation of the disclaimer requirements of section 315.
Consequently, Lingle may no longer lawfully benefit from the lowest unit charge. As a result, for the duration of the current election cycle, your station should refuse to run additional advertisements from Lingle or her campaign committee unless paid at the rate your station charges for comparable use by other non-political advertisers.
Please contact us should you have any questions regarding this matter.
Very truly yours,
Marc E. Elias Jonathan S. Berkon Counsel for Friends of Mazie Hirono

Attending this year's #BoxWorks conference has been extremely interesting for me, as I've gotten to talk to a group of people that I rarely interact with, enterprise folks. There's a nice mix of developers here, too, which makes it feel much more comfortable for those of us not working for a gigantic company. Well, I suppose I work for a gigantic company, but you know what I mean.
The good news is that Nike is adding some new colors to its Nike+ connected FuelBand and SportWatch GPS lines so your wristwear can more closely match your kicks all winter. While the original translucent limited edition Nike+ FuelBand Ice won't be returning, at the end of October it will be available in new White Ice and Black Ice colors, with distribution expanded to more Nike stores in the US, Canada and UK. If you prefer GPS, precise timing and a multiplatform Nike+ Running app to LEDs, the TomTom-powered Nike+ SportWatch GPS is rolling out a new white/silver colorway. The bad news? If you were waiting for other updates, like a FuelBand with GPS, SportWatch that can pump out some MP3s while you run, FuelBand app for Android or really anything other than cosmetic changes, you're out of luck. We wouldn't let that get in the way of a workout however, check below for more details on each or return to customizing some NikeiD Lebron Xs -- your choice.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez won re-election and a new endorsement of his socialist project Sunday, surviving his closest race yet after a bitter campaign in which the opposition accused him of unfairly using Venezuela's oil wealth and his near total control of state institutions to his advantage.
A long wait for the results produced high tensions, including a Twitter hashtag called BitingNails that became the most popular in the country. Finally, fireworks exploded over downtown Caracas amid a cacophony of horn-honking by elated Chavez supporters waving flags and jumping for joy outside the presidential palace.
With 90 percent of votes counted, Chavez had more than 54 percent of the vote to 45 percent for challenger Henrique Capriles, an athletic 40-year-old former state governor who unified and energized the opposition while barnstorming across the oil-exporting nation.
But Capriles' promises to seriously address violent crime that has spun out of control, streamline a patronage-bloated bureaucracy and end rampant corruption proved inadequate against Chavez's charisma, well-oiled political machine and a legacy of putting Venezuela's poor first with generous social welfare programs.
Chavez rallied thousands of supporters from a balcony of the presidential palace, holding up a sword that once belonged to 19th century independence hero Simon Bolivar.
"The revolution has triumphed!" Chavez told the crowd, saying his supporters "voted for socialism."
The crowd responded chanting "Chavez won't go!"
Chavez will now have a freer hand to push for an even bigger state role in the economy and continue populist programs. He pledged before the vote to make a stronger push for socialism in the next term. He's also likely to further limit dissent and deepen friendships with U.S. rivals.
A Capriles victory would have brought a radical foreign policy shift including a halt to preferential oil deals with allies such as Cuba, along with a loosening of state economic controls and an increase in private investment.
It was Chavez's third re-election in nearly 14 years in office. It was also his smallest victory margin. In 2006, he won by 27 percentage points.
"I can't describe the relief and happiness I feel right now," said Edgar Gonzalez, a 38-year-old construction worker.
He ran through crowds of Chavez supporters packing the streets around the presidential palace wearing a Venezuelan flag as a cape and yelling: "Oh, no! Chavez won't go!"
"The revolution will continue, thanks to God and the people of this great country," said Gonzalez.
Voter turnout was an impressive 81 percent, compared to 75 percent in 2006. Chavez paid close attention to his military-like get-out-the-vote organization at the grass roots, stressing its importance at campaign rallies. The opposition said he unfairly plowed millions in state funds into the effort.
Chavez spent heavily in the months before the vote, building public housing and bankrolling expanded social programs.
"I think he just cranked up the patronage machine and unleashed a spending orgy," said Michael Shifter, president of the Washington-based Inter-American Dialogue think tank.
But Shifter also didn't deny the affinity and gratefulness Venezuela's poor feel for Chavez. "Despite his illness, I still think he retains a large emotional connection with a lot of Venezuelans that I think were not prepared to vote against him."
Chavez spoke little during the campaign about his fight with cancer, which since June 2011 has included surgery to remove tumors from his pelvic region as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He has said his most recent tests showed no sign of illness.
Capriles told supporters not to feel defeated.
"We have planted many seeds across Venezuela and I know that these seeds are going to produce many trees," he told a hall of supporters.
Despite winning a February primary that unified the opposition, Capriles proved no match for Chavez's electoral prowess.
David Valencia, a 20-year-old Capriles supporter, said he was disappointed but that he hadn't lost hope despite the loss.
"There is still a sense in our hearts of wanting a better country," he said.
One pro-Chavez voter, private bodyguard Carlos Julio Silva, said that whatever his faults, Chavez deserved to win for spreading the nation's oil wealth to the poor with free medical care, public housing and other government programs. The country has the world's largest proven oil reserves.
"There is corruption, there's plenty of bureaucracy, but the people have never had a leader who cared about this country," Silva said after voting for Chavez at a school in the Caracas slum of Petare.
At many polling places, voters began lining up hours before polls opened at dawn, some snaking for blocks in the baking Caribbean sun. Some shaded themselves with umbrellas. Vendors grilled meat and some people drank beer.
Chavez's critics say the president has inflamed divisions by labeling his opponents "fascists," ''Yankees" and "neo-Nazis," and it's likely hard for many of his opponents to stomach another six years of the loquacious and conflictive leader.
Some said before the vote that they'd consider leaving the country if Chavez won.
Gino Caso, an auto mechanic, said Chavez is power-hungry and out of touch with problems such as crime. He said his son had been robbed, as had neighboring shops.
"I don't know what planet he lives on," Caso said, gesturing with hands blackened with grease. "He wants to be like Fidel Castro ? end up with everything, take control of the country."

In his new, candid autobiography, British rock legend Pete Townshend tells the extraordinary story of his life in and out of the spotlight, his innovative days with The Who, his exploits of rock abandon on and off stage, his tabloid scandal and more. Here's an excerpt.
1. I WAS THERE
It?s extraordinary, magical, surreal, watching them all dance to my feedback guitar solos; in the audience my art-school chums stand straight-backed among the slouching West and North London Mods, that army of teenagers who have arrived astride their fabulous scooters in short hair and good shoes, hopped up on pills. I can?t speak for what?s in the heads of my fellow bandmates, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon or John Entwistle. Usually I?d be feeling like a loner, even in the middle of the band, but tonight, in June 1964, at The Who?s first show at the Railway Hotel in Harrow, West London, I am invincible.
From hard rock to hardcover: 8 amazing rock autobiographies
We?re playing R&B: ?Smokestack Lightning?, ?I?m a Man?, ?Road Runner? and other heavy classics. I scrape the howling Rickenbacker guitar up and down my microphone stand, then flip the special switch I recently fitted so the guitar sputters and sprays the front row with bullets of sound. I violently thrust my guitar into the air ? and feel a terrible shudder as the sound goes from a roar to a rattling growl; I look up to see my guitar?s broken head as I pull it away from the hole I?ve punched in the low ceiling.
It is at this moment that I make a split-second decision ? and in a mad frenzy I thrust the damaged guitar up into the ceiling over and over again. What had been a clean break becomes a splintered mess. I hold the guitar up to the crowd triumphantly. I haven?t smashed it: I?ve sculpted it for them. I throw the shattered guitar carelessly to the ground, pick up my brand-new Rickenbacker twelve-string and continue the show.

Prom: An American rite of passage
That Tuesday night I stumbled upon something more powerful than words, far more emotive than my white-boy attempts to play the blues. And in response I received the full-throated salute of the crowd. A week or so later, at the same venue, I ran out of guitars and toppled the stack of Marshall amplifiers. Not one to be upstaged, our drummer Keith Moon joined in by kicking over his drumkit. Roger started to scrape his microphone on Keith?s cracked cymbals. Some people viewed the destruction as a gimmick, but I knew the world was changing, and a message was being conveyed. The old, conventional way of making music would never be the same.
I had no idea what the first smashing of my guitar would lead to, but I had a good idea where it all came from. As the son of a clarinettist and saxophonist in the Squadronaires, the prototypical British swing band, I had been nourished by my love for that music, a love I would betray for a new passion: rock ?n? roll, the music that came to destroy it.
I am British. I am a Londoner. I was born in West London just as the devastating Second World War came to a close. As a working artist I have been significantly shaped by these three facts, just as the lives of my grandparents and parents were shaped by the darkness of war. I was brought up in a period when war still cast shadows, though in my life the weather changed so rapidly it was impossible to know what was in store. War had been a real threat or a fact for three generations of my family.
In 1945 popular music had a serious purpose: to defy postwar depression and revitalise the romantic and hopeful aspirations of an exhausted people. My infancy was steeped in awareness of the mystery and romance of my father?s music, which was so important to him and Mum that it seemed the centre of the universe. There was laughter and optimism; the war was over. The music Dad played was called Swing. It was what people wanted to hear. I was there.
